Background:<\/b> Living with HIV\/AIDS has psycho-social\u00a0challenges, adoption of positive coping strategy is necessary\u00a0<\/span>for good treatment outcomes. Adolescents living with HIV\u00a0<\/span>have been reported to be poorly adherent to antiretroviral\u00a0<\/span>therapy, could this be because of psycho-social challenges?\u00a0<\/span>What coping strategies have some adolescents adopted to\u00a0<\/span>overcome psycho-social challenges?<\/span><\/p>

Objectives:<\/b> Study objective was to identify psychosocial\u00a0challenges and coping strategies of adolescents living with\u00a0<\/span>HIV.<\/span><\/p>

Method:<\/b> Study setting was Nigerian Institute of Medical\u00a0Research, Lagos. Study design was cross sectional using\u00a0<\/span>interviewer administered semi-structured questionnaire.\u00a0<\/span>Study population was adolescents living with HIV, sample size\u00a0<\/span>was calculated based on prevalence of HIV in Nigerian\u00a0<\/span>adolescents, convenient sampling was employed. Data\u00a0<\/span>analyzed using SPSS VER.17.0. Socio-demographic data and\u00a0<\/span>coping strategies are presented as descriptive statistics; chi-\u00a0<\/span>square was used to determine association of explanatory\u00a0<\/span>variables of age and sex on experiencing psychosocial\u00a0<\/span>challenge or coping strategy adopted. Two major coping\u00a0<\/span>strategies were investigated, emotion-focused – involves use\u00a0of negative emotions and spirituality because the stressor is\u00a0<\/span>perceived as being beyond one’s control and problem-<\/span>focused, where solution is sought to ameliorate the stressor.<\/span><\/p>

Results:<\/b> Sample size was 34, 23(67.6%) male; 11(32.4%)\u00a0female; mean age 15.7 years (\u00b12.7). Most frequent\u00a0<\/span>psychosocial challenge was disclosure of HIV-status (27)79%.\u00a0<\/span>All respondents (100%) adopted a combination of both\u00a0<\/span>Problem-focused and Emotion-focused coping skills. Younger\u00a0<\/span>age (?13years), had statistically significant association with\u00a0<\/span>both experience of a psychosocial challenge (X2 =9.268,\u00a0<\/span>P=0.026) and adoption of Emotion-focused coping strategy.\u00a0<\/span>Gender had no statistically significant association with\u00a0<\/span>neither experience of psychosocial challenge nor coping\u00a0<\/span>strategy adopted.<\/span><\/p>

Conclusion:<\/b> This study showed that HIV status disclosure is a\u00a0major psychosocial challenge in the sampled adolescent\u00a0<\/span>population and all respondents employed a combination of\u00a0<\/span>both Emotion-focused and Problem-focused coping\u00a0<\/span>strategies.<\/span><\/p>
