color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">from dyspepsia. They are weak bases which neutralize the gastric acid and raise the pH of the gastric contents. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">potency of antacids depends on their acid neutralizing capacity (ANC). The ANC varies from one product to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">other depending on their formulations.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O<b>bjectives:<\/b> This study evaluated rate and extent of acid neutralization of some antacid formulations available in\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">the Nigerian market.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Methods:<\/b> Ten liquid formulations were sampled from pharmacies, stored according to manufacturer&#8217;s\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">recommendations before analysis. All samples were coded by an independent researcher (blinding) and studied\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">for their acid neutralizing capacity. Both acid neutralizing capacity and the neutralizing efficiency was studied for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">all sampled antacids using the British Pharmacopoeia 2013 method. Constituents were also noted for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">pharmacotherapy review. Analysis was carried out in triplicates and data analysed using analysis of variance.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Results:<\/b> Six of the ten antacid preparations satisfied all the conditions stipulated for an efficient and efficacious\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">antacid in the BP. The ANC among the liquid formulations was highest for ANCS 1g 27.51\u00b10.05 and lowest for ANCS\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">1j 20.13\u00b1 0.17 antacid formulations.
