This is particularly important in\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">antimicrobials, given the current trend in the development of antimicrobial resistance and the questions\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">concerning the possible carcinogenic effect of traditional cosmetic preservatives like the parabens.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Objectives:<\/b> This study is aimed at investigating the combined antimicrobial properties of essential oils\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">extracted from Cymbopogon citratus and Citrus sinensis peels, and to evaluate their preservative efficacy in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">aqueous creams.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Methods:<\/b> The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation. Their antibacterial and antifungal activities\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">were evaluated using the disc agar diffusion method while their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">were determined by the agar dilution method. The combined antimicrobial effects of the essential oils were\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">also evaluated using a modified checkerboard method. Various decimal combinations of the oils were\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">included informulated creams, and the physicochemical and microbiological stability (preservative activities)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">of the creams assayed.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Results:<\/b> Antimicrobial screening showed that C. citratus and C. sinensis both had strong antifungal activities\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">against the species tested but have variable antibacterial activities against different bacterial species. All the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">decimal combinations of the essential oils had synergistic effects against the studied bacteria as shown by the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index against the various test isolates.
