D.    ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

o   Our faculty is fully on course in respect of meeting her mandate in the area of academics. The new curriculum developed and adopted since last year is currently what drives the academic training in the faculty.

o   Specialization of students in the faculty is also on course. At the moment, the following specialty areas are being offered in the faculty: Cardiovascular, Endocrine and renal pharmacy specialty and Infectious diseases.

o   The faculty participates actively in College Update lectures and examination.

o   The residency guideline for the faculty has also been reviewed. The draft has been forwarded to the Harmonization Committee for approval.

o   The Research Coordination Committee saddled with the responsibility of organizing community-based multi-center research with the ultimate aim of making evidence-based recommendations based on the outcome of the research work has not been optimal. A new committee will be inaugurated to handle the Research coordination and implementation for the faculty.

 E.     WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS ORGANIZED BY THE FACULTY

 o   CERTIFIED DIABETES EDUCATORS WORKSHOP.

§  The faculty commenced the process of organizing Certified Diabetes Educator’s workshop last year.

§  We intended to organize this workshop in partnership with Endocrine and Metabolism Society of Nigeria (EMSON), Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), WAPCP Nigeria Chapter and other Chapters of WAPCP. Unfortunately, the death of the President of EMSON (Prof (Mrs) Eregie – whom we were to have collaborated with for the implementation of the training workshop caused a delay in implementation.

§  Having completed the funeral rites of Prof Eregie the training workshop is now billed to take place before end of this year. A committee has been set up in this regard.

§  The training workshop is intended to be hybrid – both virtual and hands-on. The virtual component will take a more detailed insight into some contemporary topics in Diabetes such as: current trends in pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to diabetes management. Special focus will be placed on current trends in insulin therapy and the role of community pharmacists in optimizing care for persons living with diabetes.

§  The hands-on component will cover areas such as: commonly available POCT devices for diabetes management, current approach to insulin administration, medical nutrition therapy, foot care in diabetes management etc.

§  The ultimate objective of the workshop is to train the needed manpower that will offer specialized pharmaceutical care services to persons living with Diabetes in the community. At the end, participants will be certified as Diabetes Educators.

§  We will be glad to carry out the hand-on component of this training in other member countries once the faculty representatives are able to mobilize the needed number of participants for the training.

§  The criteria for certification will be full participation in both the virtual and hands-on components of the training.

o   Entrepreneurship masterclass.

§  This virtual entrepreneurship master class has been going as planned. Unfortunately, we missed that of 2nd quarter of 2024 owing to circumstances beyond our control.

§  The one for third quarter of this year is billed to take place in Sept 2024.

.

F.     EVENTS AND COLLABORATION

    • Our faculty collaborates with relevant bodies in her quest to attain her strategic intent. Currently our faculty collaborates with Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) and WAPCP Nigeria Chapter. We look forward to collaborating with EMSON, ACPN and WAPCP Chapters in the implementation of certified diabetes educator’s workshop we plan to do before end of the year.
    • Our faculty participated actively in most programs of ACPN where it delivers goodwill message and use the opportunity to promote the College and market our faculty to members of ACPN.

G.    ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS

    • Some of the achievements of the faculty are already highlighted in the earlier sections of this report.
    • In addition, the faculty has completed and submitted a draft residency guideline for training of fellows in the faculty.
    • Also, the faculty is at the verge of completing the minimum standard of practice guideline for Fellows in community practice.

H.    CHALLENGES

    • The number of students in our faculty is still grossly low. We believe that with the training workshops being mounted more community pharmacists will indicate interest in the faculty. We also hope that the community pharmacists in other faculties will be encouraged to transfer to our faculty where they rightly belong.

I.       PLANS FOR REMAING PART OF 2024 / CONCLUSION.
