REPORT OF FACULTY OF PUBLIC HEALTH PHARMACY PRESENTED AT THE JOINT FACULTY BOARD MEETING OF THE WEST AFRICAN POSTGRADUATE COLLEGE OF PHARMACISTS (WAPCP) ON TUESDAY, 20TH AUGUST, 2024

LAGOS

INTRODUCTION

The main aim of the Faculty of Public Health Pharmacy which perfectly aligns with the vision of West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists is to train pharmacists that will have adequate knowledge and skills to make significant impact in public health activities.

To this end, the strategic plan of the faculty are:

1.      Clear definition of areas of specialization in public health pharmacy

2.      Involvement of fellows with experience in public health practice in the faculty programs

3.      Collaboration with public health organization in building capacity of our students and practicing fellows

4.      Regular public health awareness campaign on disease of public health importance

We currently have four (4) distinct areas of specialization in faculty of public health pharmacy.

a.       Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance

b.      Immunization and Health Commodities Logistics Management

c.       Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infectious Disease Control

d.      Mental Health & Behavioural Health Pharmacy

Other areas of specialization that we may consider in the future are:

FACULTY MEETINGS

We had our faculty meeting during the AGM in The Gambia on the 17th April, 2024. We deliberated on several issues including the need to carry out Public Health related research on Substance Abuse in West Africa sub-Region.

Aside the general faculty meeting, key persons in the faculty also met to draw up the minimum standard for practice as fellows in the Faculty of Public Health Pharmacy.

ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Azuka Oparah, past chairman of the Faculty of Public Health Pharmacy delivered the 319th Inaugural lecture at University of Benin and the 1st inaugural lecture in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice, titled “Pharmaceutical Care for the King”. Congratulation to the Inaugural lecturer-Prof Azuka Oparah.

Research: We are currently carrying out research on “Substance Abuse in Lagos, Nigeria” as a pilot to a larger study in West Africa sub-Region.

WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS ORGANIZED BY THE FACULTY

In collaboration with African Field Epidemiology Network (AFFINET), We organized a-3-day virtual workshop on Disease Surveillance from 9th to 11th July, 2024. The workshop was impactful and well attended.

We are discussing with public health pharmacists working in National Health Insurance Scheme and National Centre for Disease Control for collaboration in organizing workshop and making available residency space for our students.

We want to assure the Joint Faculty Board (JFB) of our commitment to promoting the activities of the faculty of public health pharmacy and also to empower our students and fellows through periodic webinars and workshops in topical areas in public health.
